Monument to Life (Pentalogie)English Introduction

As an artistic and philosophical work, the "Pentalogie" aims at exposing the modern man's
emotional relationship to his own existence and to the world.

As it is clearly revealed through its name, it consists of five statues ranging from number
one to number five. The way they are related to each other, their orientation and the space
they fill give information not only about their relationship but also about the different steps
they characterize.

This Art work aims at being a turning point representing both a situation and an emotional
and spiritual bend; it is set at the junction between Mind and Emotions with an eminently
western meaning.

The flight of steps opens up on the Pentalogie backwards;
- on the lowest internal level; LIFE. : the Archer shooting an arrow represents life in action.
- DEATH uses one hand to point at her and the other to impose silence on the three preceding statues.
- MENACE takes a run-up in its will to destroy, but Death breaks its bound.
- GOD ! OH, MY GOD !: Extreme, the gift of love thrown towards the sky,
with doubt questioning.
- HUMAN LOVE , coiling up with emotions.
- On the site circle the compass card shows West as North..and the notching transmits
the monument's movement to the World.

This ascent leads us to the starting point of the work : the statue of Human Love symbolising
an autarkic affectivity, this statue doesn't say what love means, it simply exposes its limit.
The hands caress the body, the lips express pleasure, but the tensed eyes reveal the bounds
of its state and lead us to:

"God ! oh My God !" (why did You forsake me ?) Jesus ,who is the Call for love, becomes,
by this question, the absolute metaphysical knot. At that precise moment, for the first time,
the break from the super-tangible is present and encoded.
This statue is symbolizing humanity and the loss of God, on the way to un-deification,
entering doubt as a long lasting element.

The course illustrated by the PENTALOGIE is emotional and spiritual, but also concerns
the march of time. The more we enter the Work, the closer we get to the present Modern man.
Present throughout History as a great loss, destructivity is symbolized by
Menace.
At the end of the century, we have reached a point where the potentiality of destruction and oblivion is total.
This is the time of absolute risk, the time of Everything or Nothing.
Facing this danger, facing the obvious and growing threat, it is essential to search our new
fundamental values, starting with our conception of life and death.

The absolute risk sends us back to Death. Death and the fear of it become the last barrier.
At the time of doubt and oblivion, "equal death to all" becomes the pure unknowable,
wich goes beyond the experience capacity.

In every metaphysical-religious system it is the pivot of the conception of life. From the fear
of death of the individual, systems of skirting have been elaborated and meant for everyone
and they have concealed the refusal of the individual. Nevertheless,
Death remains true and
disconcerting by its unavoidable presence. She is the Unknown-Known. Nowadays,
as in the first period of human conscience, the individual has to face her on his own.
Death statue wears an empty fool's cap. She commands silence and reflexion from the preceding
caracters and aims at
Life with her left hand. Causing strong feelings, she is the eternal counsellor,
Life's matrix. Expressing so, inside the cap is the negative of the preceding statue face whitch is
the dialectical link wich leads to the fifth step.
The first four statues are facing the inside of the Pentalogie. Only Life faces the outside and
turns her back on them. Medium sized, of human dimensions like Death, Life is the ever present
youth of the living mind. It is set in reference to the Greek Zeus as he is striking lightning; the typical
figure of the fatherly God setting values, with a top to bottom gesture of the right hand.

Life represents a left handed archer shooting an arrow at the setting sun. As it has not reach its target,
the arrow is the act the result of which is
unknown result. Thus, the statue symbolizes the modern
human being who lives and acts no knowing exactly what he's aiming at. He lives outside the limits
of a metaphysical projection. The combination of his smile and defiant look expresses paradoxically
all the uncertainty of our spiritual position in our most advanced civilization. We posses a widespread
analytical knowledge, but we are not able to see the overall picture and we must do our best.
The consciousness of the absence of certitude characterizes our being which is life's challenge
to inner and outer depths.
Life smiles at the necessity to act and plays the game; which is why it's also called the Player.

The Monument reaches its highest level in the choice of Life, with a look conscious of the call of the future.
The PENTALOGIE aims at replacing the individual in front of its own individuality which only exists
in the courage to act for knowledge and consciousness in this world, this Arc between the Past
and the Future witch is the Present.

Within a step
of the playing King
the pointing, hollow-faced fool.

The game is wise
and excess kills strength.

As the Great Talker's bats
were blinded by light,
by the most powerful symbol of the five periods
blinded are we.

For friends,.. see..!
Life does know what it's all about.
She fears for her life,
and thinks of the encounter.

At last, should we mention it?
Life,.. Game's stake,..
the playing King, his smile and his harrow,
the Fool...living Death's mirror,
the West and the North
are but one and only thing.

What's to be lost ?
